Sun signs are easier. There, I said it. The sun is seen, that’s one of its vital functions. It burns bright and hot enough to warm our planet perfectly and enable life and growth.
The moon is different. There are times it cannot be seen. While the sun is about being, the moon is about feeling. It emits no light of its own, moonlight is a reflection. The moon is how we receive our lives, how we nurture ourselves.
The moon symbolizes many things. Among them, emotion, lineage, the body. The sign your moon is in speaks to your emotional landscape, how you connect. How you filter what happens in your outer life to your inner life.
Let’s start with fire moons because, honestly, I’m not sure they’ll stick around until the end. Things to do, places to be, trails to blaze. Fire signs are leaders. Inspirational movers, shakers and cheerleaders. A fire moon can take a chill sun sign like Taurus or Capricorn and kick it up a notch. Aries, Leo and Sagittarius feed off of passion and spontaneity.
Fire Moons
Aries ♈︎
When the moon’s soft, receptive way of being is in the sign of the warrior, the duality is real. The moon in Aries is quick and changeable. It feels nourished when in motion, taking action. Situations that involve a little bit of pressure can be just the ticket to feeling your best. There is one thing these two energies can agree on, though. Protection. The moon is both the mother and the crab. Both hold protection in high regard. Aries is unafraid of confrontation. The moon here protects what it loves ferociously.
Nourishing Aries Moon:
Motion: For Aries moon, moving the body can be its own type of prayer. Whether that looks like intense workouts, consistent walks around the neighborhood or swaying in the kitchen during meal prep. Movement can feel like comfort.
Inspire: Fire signs have no shortage of ideas and Aries is no exception. If you’re not in motion now, rest assured that will change. Be ready for forward momentum with brainstorms. Not all ideas are good ideas, but brainstorming them out gets them out of your head and into the world where they can take root and, in true fire sign fashion, lead you forward.
Decide: To flex and strengthen this muscle, affirmations and mantras could feel really effective. Aries is the first sign in the zodiac for a reason. It is the first spark of consciousness. The will to do. Decide on some affirmations that feel good to you, that make you feel motivated and post-it note them. Mirror, desk, by the front door. Ideas that spark and fuel you. Seeing the words “I am going to finish this manuscript” over and over can’t hurt, right?
Leo ♌︎
What does it mean for the sun’s energy to be filtered through the comfort of the moon? It means warmth. Leo is one of those astrological paradoxes in which fire wants to move, but its energy in Leo is fixed. The result is delightful. Leo is best known for its affability and generosity. Leo’s ruler, the sun, gives of itself consistently and all it asks in return is to be witnessed. The moon here loves pleasure and play. A romantic and a lover (and a fighter if need be).
Nourishing Leo Moon:
Make: Whether you’re a serious artist or not - pointless art is important for all us, but especially you, Leo moon. Leo rules creativity. Finding your way to creativity can feel tricky, so a low pressure, no reason craft store run could be the gateway to a nourishing weekend that feels like a recharge.
Share: Self expression is Leo’s thing. Lions roar. Finding a workshop or open mic that allows you to share excerpts from your work could feel really empowering. Gathering and nerding out over poetry or memoirs works too. Reading work that speaks to you can have a two-for-one effect. It can feed your moon and also quench your innate desire for performance and feeling seen.
Find fun: Some moon signs can be tricky, not yours. Leo’s capacity to access joy and pleasure is one of the most brag worthy tools on its tool belt. Fun, whatever that looks like to you, feels like cozy comfort. Use this as your excuse to get in touch with your inner child whenever possible.
Sagittarius ♐︎
The moon in Sagittarius has a lot of questions and is willing to travel to get the answers. A big question on every Sag’s mind is - where is the party? Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, the planet known for wanting to socialize and enjoy itself. The moon here is flexible and honest. It wants variety and change. This placement is a lifelong lesson in letting go as self care. Sagittarius seeks. It is always looking for big truths. Philosophy and learning rank high on its list of priorities, but needing to be serious is not a prerequisite for Sag. If it can find some good times along the way, it has found contentment.
Nourishing Sagittarius Moon:
Learn: Learning is a journey, Sag knows this and is up for the challenge. Whether that looks like literally loving travel, or learning through books at home, synthesizing different views of the world feels nourishing for you. Your cup feels full when you are prioritizing learning about something.
Change it up: On your moon-led learning journey it’s essential to change it up. Variety is everything for Sagittarius (it shares this axis with its sister sign, Gemini). Change and release is the name of the game with this moon sign. Never feel ashamed of your did-not-finish pile or time spent socializing in workshops instead of focusing on the prompts, Sag doesn’t really subscribe to the ideas of success and failure, only learning opportunities.
Excitement: Being ruled by Jupiter has its perks. The tendency to be optimistic drives you to be a risk taker. Things that get your adrenaline racing could feel just as comforting for you as a warm cup of tea to an earth sign. If hectic feels like home and you’re the kind of person who works on a bunch of projects at a time, your moon sign wants you to embrace it.
Fire moons keep everyone else on their toes and make paths for the rest of us to follow. Fierce, fun and full of passion, these people move through life with enthusiasm and honesty.

Fire Moon Poetry Prompt
“The heat presses down equally
everywhere. It wants to focus itself,
to vaporize something instantaneously,
efficiently—that shopping cart, maybe,
or that half-crushed brown-glass bottle—
but can’t quite. Asphalt softens in the sun.”
— Monica Youn, A Parking Lot in West Houston
