Hi, I’m Rios! As an indie author and a mama to a toddler, one of my daily internal predicaments is setting time aside for creative pursuits. Time is a different dimension when you have a child. Time is fluid and somehow melds into a blur, going faster and faster as you watch your little one grow at a rate seemingly impossible. Parenthood is being in a liminal space.
At first, I wrote stories as a method of survival. Now, I write to feel balanced, I write to explore my imagination, and I write for fun. As a writer, one of my favorite things to do is to entice other people to start writing again. Those who are stuck. Those who are unsure of where to start. Those who have a story on the tip of their tongue and all they need is a simple push. Someone new to ask them, “hey, why don’t you write about this?” and that’s it, they get words on the page.
I offer generative writing workshops as a gentle way to push people into being creative, to journal, to write about dreams, to unravel.
What I love about writing prompts is that they can be multilayered, you can excavate further into a prompt that inspires you. The prompts I am offering are meant to be open, to be interpreted as you wish. Write freely. Follow the story strands that feel exciting, that keep your imagination playful. Create a space of 10 to 20 minutes for yourself and write. In today’s prompt, you will explore breaking tradition.
Rios de la Luz is the author of the novella, Itzá, and the short story collection, An Altar of Stories to Liminal Saints (Broken River Books).
