Last year I launched the Freedom Ways essay portion of our ongoing series in collaboration with Sari Botton at Memoir Land. As with everything I’m interested in, I wanted a deeper look into how pivotal moments in our lives help to shape our telling of our own narratives and what role art plays in that. I am always in deep reverence of the enormous work we undertake simply by being born Black or brown. We don’t have to wait for our story to be told, and certainly not by the victor.
In the tradition of charting our own paths and reclaiming our history, “Freedom Ways” was born.
For those of you who are new here, and those who want a refresher on this series, here’s a taste. You can also find the entire “Freedom Ways” series here.
We will host our first collaborative live reading this summer! Stay tuned for more information on that.
Literary Liberation and Memoir Land pay contributors to this series. Help us continue to share more “Freedom Ways” stories below:

And here’s a look back at some of our powerful interviews in the series with hiwot adilow, Saskia Kercy, and Noah Arhm Choi. The beauty of this series is we speak to the urgency of the times but also touch the common thread through history of our station as artists to shape and tell the truth at all costs.
