I’m not here for fame. I’m not here for undue accolades. I’m here to serve, but I don’t believe in doing so at a personal deficit. Pricing is something every artistic person lacking historically significant financial means struggles with. Especially when it feels intangible. Especially when you are taught to not ask for anything and you are unlearning that.
Something in certain pockets of our culture that we’ve fully embraced is shaming people for their financial decisions. I’m not saying this because I think I’m above it all, I’m still human, but for almost all of time we’ve allowed society to dictate worth. At some point, we have to be able to call ourselves in and evaluate why and how we spend. How does it serve not only yourself, but others? Every transaction is at the end of a relationship. Are we fostering relationships that buoy us, or help us sink?
I know what a pinched purse feels like in adulthood. I know what inaccessibility feels like. I don’t want to perpetuate that. I actually want to reject the idea that the more you pay for something, the better the perceived quality is. But I also want to be able to hire part time staff and pay myself a decent salary and build a legitimate business that isn’t in the red.
