Overview:
I found Audre Lorde’s Sister Outsider by accident. I was a teenager exploring a used bookstore, when I found a 1984 teal blue edition. I didn’t even know who Audre Lorde was, but this book had me at the title as a Black Dominican girl attending a private school in NYC. I couldn’t have been more ready for some Audre Lorde in my life. While reading the book, I went beyond accepting that I felt out of place to understanding why I felt that way and figuring out what I was going to do about it. I felt so seen by her work, held, and also ready to pop off at another school that was never intended for people like me. Come to find out—in college—that Audre Lorde is legendary, that her work had impacted so many of my peers, that organizations print her face on notebooks intended for young NYC poets. Today, I have a niece named Zami.
This is an invitation: for you to re/read Sister Outsider in community; to choose this nourishing, communal, deeply reflective, and feeling-centered approach to engaging with a text; to be shaken, strengthened, and rooted by Audre Lorde’s wisdom and share your reflections; to listen with care; and to write or create something from wherever Audre Lorde’s words glimmer or stir most for you.
The vibe? Less academic; more feeling, real connection, & deep reflection. I chose the language of "Study Circle" over "Book Club" because, to me, it emphasizes a deeper engagement with the text, and it reminds me that studying can be an embodied & deeply felt experience that includes seeing the text through the lens of our daily lives.
