ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Overview
Do you believe that truth is sometimes stranger and more interesting than fiction? Do you want to write fiction but are struggling with your imagination or finding ‘new' material?
Do you feel inspired to tell real stories but are unsure about revealing the whole truth?
In this playful, experiential workshop, we will explore how to turn lived experiences into compelling fiction. We will start with the truth, add in some lies, and cook them together in a magical storied concoction. We will live in that space in-between ‘truth’ and ‘untruth', between memory and imagination, and see what happens.
In my own experience as a fiction writer, I often use the technique of ‘fictionalising’ i.e. drawing upon real life for plot, setting and characters, altering and loosening a few details, to weave together a new tale. Especially for writers who are new to fiction-writing or feeling creatively blocked, this practice can help us source our story material and find inspiration from our own rich and comical, mysterious and mundane lives.
Takeaways
Through simple tips and writing exercises, you will learn:
how to mine your history and memory for interesting personal anecdotes.
how to play with these real stories to enhance drama, plot, and narrative closure.
how to tread the fine line between truth and fiction, to delve into the liminal worlds of memoir, auto fiction and personal storytelling.
Who is this workshop for:
Writers across levels who want to play with these techniques- new and beginner writers, exhausted and burnt-out writers or those experiencing a creative block.
All Literary Liberation classes take place online and are accessible to students anywhere in the world. This workshop will be recorded.
