ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Details
We have always been artists and storytellers. It is part of our DNA as humans. By tapping into this biological wellspring, we can discover, uncover, and make space for stories about one of the most profound transitions of a woman’s life: the postpartum period. In this generative workshop we will explore our postpartum journeys—the beautiful and the terrible, the hilarious and the surreal, the mundane and the profound. Like using a rock and a flint, we will combine drawing with writing to spark new stories, images, ideas, reflections, and insights about our rites of passage into motherhood.
What you will learn
You will practice and play with a variety of visual and written storytelling techniques to explore your postpartum journey.
You will practice drawing and writing in creative collaboration to develop your storytelling.
You will learn about the comic making and teaching techniques of Lynda Barry and Ivan Buretti.
Workshop takeaways
You will finish the generative workshop with 4 first draft pieces you may wish to revise and develop further.
You will finish with ~18 sketches that you may wish to develop into graphic memoir, essays, poems, or stories.
You will have handouts describing our in-class activities so that you may continue practicing them after the workshop.
All Literary Liberation classes take place online and are accessible to students anywhere in the world. This workshop will not be recorded.
